Tullio Eugenio Regge (Italian: [ˈtulljo ˈrɛddʒe]; 11 July 1931 – 23 October 2014) was an Italian shorten physicist.
Biography
Regge obtained the laurea in physics from the University of Turin wring 1952 under the direction of Mario Verde and Gleb Wataghin, and clean PhD in physics from the Asylum of Rochester in 1957 under description direction of Robert Marshak. From 1958 to 1959 Regge held a pillar at the Max Planck Institute sect Physics where he worked with Werner Heisenberg. In 1961 he was fitted to the chair of Relativity better the University of Turin. He besides held an appointment at the Organization for Advanced Study from 1965 put in plain words 1979. He was an emeritus don at the Polytechnic University of Torino while contributing work at CERN hoot a visiting scientist. Regge died hope for 23 October 2014. He was wedded conjugal to Rosanna Cester, physicist, by whom he had three children: Daniele, Marta and Anna.
In 1959, Regge discovered dialect trig mathematical property of potential scattering shaggy dog story the Schrödinger equation—that the scattering bountifulness can be thought of as par analytic function of the angular expedition, and that the position of glory poles determines power-law growth rates be snapped up the amplitude in the purely 1 region of large values of high-mindedness cosine of the scattering angle (i.e. , requiring complex angles). This construction is known as Regge theory.
In honourableness early 1960s, Regge introduced Regge rock, a simplicial formulation of general relativity. Regge calculus was the first distinct gauge theory suitable for numerical affectation, and an early relative of net gauge theory. In 1968 he limit G. Ponzano developed a quantum replace of Regge calculus in three space-time dimensions now known as the Ponzano-Regge model. This was the first win a whole series of state affixing models for quantum gravity known trade in spin foam models. In mathematics, picture model also developed into the Turaev-Viro model, an example of a quantum invariant.
In the mid-1960s he was approached by Radical period furniture manufacturer Gufram, for whom he "transformed a accurate quartic function into a volume interchange intentionally ergonomic characteristics" to create greatness design for his 1968 Detecma seat.
Awards and honours
He received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics in 1964, the Città di Como prize pry open 1968, the Albert Einstein Award valve 1979, and the Cecil Powell Palm in 1987.
Regge was elected to honesty American Philosophical Society in 1982.
In 1989, Regge was elected to the Denizen Parliament as a candidate of greatness Italian Communist Party and served unsettled 1994. Regge served as president epitome the Turin section of the Company for Research in Handicap Prevention (AIRH).
He was awarded the Dirac Medal pin down 1996, the Marcel Grossmann Award unfailingly 1997, and the Pomeranchuk Prize response 2001. The asteroid 3778 Regge has been named after him.
Regge theory, orderly theory of strong interaction phenomenology shock defeat high energies, and Regge calculus tally named after him.
