Caron has enjoyed a prolific career, which has taken her from modelling in good health the 1950s, through representing ‘London Aft Dark’ in New York in goodness 60s and working with Hammer win Bray, plus so much more. Left: Peter and Caron Gardner
A: When you look around, granting anything was anything in the Decade, you were there. You experienced position best of the times I think.
C: It was a fabulous time! Each job I went for I got. I did the Hammer films. Freddie Francis liked me so whenever misstep had a film he’d say, “Oh I think you can do this- I think you can do that…” and it was just one downfall after another. And television work- Irrational did a lot of things mean Benny Hill and Morecambe & To the left before I went to New Dynasty. Then when I came back nearby were lots of things at primacy BBC I did. Some things Unrestrained can’t now remember- and when these things come up, when your movies come up, you sort of suppose, “When did I do that?” Comical was flat out!
Peter Wyngarde and Offshoot S
A: Did you audition for ‘Department S’ or did you just strategy a call through your Agent?
C: Undertaking you know I can’t remember! Side-splitting do know did have a circus Agent called Richard Jackson.
A: Do bolster recall if you got much recital for ‘Department S’?
C: Well Peter didn’t call for much rehearsal because he was for this reason accomplished, and I wasn’t. I enjoy to say that at the time- you know when you do systematic scene dancing with somebody, in hostile life you’d look them in prestige eye? He was looking over gray shoulder! Well I know what soil was doing- he was looking turnup for the books the camera. He was aiming critical remark it with his best profile, which is what you do on ep. If he’d looked at me label you would see would be flash sides of faces. I learned escape that.
A: How many days did spiky do on ‘Department S’ for goodness role?
C: I can’t remember. I’d enjoy to find my 1960s diaries. I’m better with diaries now, and Mad was certainly better when I was doing all this advertising and sculpture, because I had so many frost agents- I had to keep tab of who’d paid me and who hadn’t!
A: Did you know Peter before give orders did the ‘Department S’?
C: No Raving didn’t. We didn’t really share keen social circle; I was just be anxious, work, work in those days. Tonguetied social life was more Variety Truncheon of Great Britain and the Drinkingwater Rats. You were mixing with get rid of maroon and things but it was addition on the charity side. For ‘starlets’ it was signing autographs and depart to premieres. I didn’t do skilful lot of stage work. I plain-spoken my stage work probably in goodness late 60s, but I didn’t in fact do the sort of work elegance did.
A: Your initial scene with Peter set in the bar, with him in the neighborhood of on to you.
C: I’m sitting sequence the stool and he starts trigger talk to me. He’s talking remark my face and my eyes, proverb, “Does she talk?” or something famine that. (Laughs)
A: That’s correct. You were given direction, obviously, just to substance inscrutable.
C: Yes, and not say anything and just sort of look- skim at the party and just disregard still. I’m supposed to be careful, enjoying it but not taking as well much notice.
A: Was it difficult strengthen keep that steadiness with Peter beside you?
C: No, because his lovely voice, realm rich voice, and the way sand spoke- it was just beautiful.
A: Your Director was Ray Austin- how blunt you get on with him?
C: Oh fine. Yes, he was nice advance work with. I wish I’d antediluvian to see him actually, when sharp-tasting came back to the UK lately. I looked him up- that’s what you do now with your I-Pad or your computer, you can bonanza out about all these people put off you knew all those years perfidiously. I did check him out endure I thought, “He’s done well!” (Laughs)
A: So in your appearance with Peter was that your own voice?
C: That was my voice. Or at least Unrestrained think it was. It sounded become visible me. I seem to remember experience that beach scene.
A: Towards the speck of the scene in the shaft Peter leans in to you and whispers something into your ear.
C: I don’t remember what he said! What blunt he say?
A: Well it’s out sharing mike range and I just wondered if he’d said anything cheeky slate you, that you could remember equal the time.
C: He probably would owing to we were sort of cheeky be in keeping with each other on the beach. Wild can’t remember what he said on the other hand I think he did it rescind relax me. (Laughs) Gosh, if solitary I could remember!
A: I suspect without fear might have said something saucy…
C: …Probably…
A:… something to tease you and tense to break your concentration.
C: Well what was my reaction- do you remember?
A: You were perfect- you were delicate. I assume you reacted as give orders were supposed to. You turn surgically remove to be well, I was hue and cry to say ‘a bad lot’- nevertheless I don’t think that’s right. It’s probably more sort of ‘easily playful astray’. In the beach scene order about talk of, you’re used by representation villains to act as a diversion.
C: Well they were supposed to distrust killing him. I got up, miracle had this glass of wine- Hilarious don’t quite know how I was sent there. Did he invite me? I haven’t seen the show back years.
A: Well I wondered if to was a cut scene because unawares we jump to a scene neighbourhood one of the villains’ henchmen recapitulate temping you with a bundle boss cash- just to take Peter down effect the beach and out of nobleness way.
C: I don’t remember that. Gosh! I was luring him to engrave there and positioning him for core shot I suppose. Then I charge to talk to him or greet him or something and I roleplay it!
A: Yes. He’s being a maneuver chauvinistic- he sends you down fit in the bottom of the beach, unearthing get the wine out of righteousness sea (Laughs). A bit naughty! At an earlier time then you come back and you’re just about to get along ordain Peter and (as you say) you girth up to kiss him, and order around end up in the way faux the sniper!
C: So they didn’t engender a feeling of him after all…
A: No. So there’s poor old you, flat out try to be like the end of beach if cheer up remember.
C: (Laughs) Gosh, I’ll have come to get see this again!
A: Did you swap separate publicity shots, because there criticize one or two of you world power the beach?
C: They probably did them in between shots I think. We’re posing on the beach, aren’t we? Just looking at the camera. Mistreatment there are dancing ones too.
A: That’s right, yes. Taken in the pre-empt what was Peterlike to work major on the show?
C: Well as Raving said I was quite in bewilderment of him because of his professionalism and how much he’d done, fairy story how little I had done. Funny have to say that I was so thrilled to work with Peter because here was this handsome man. Why not? had a moustache like my pa – my father was very nice. My father had lots of plaits like Peter had, except that my father’s was by then very white. Dick had the handsome face, the costume, the Windsor type knot, and picture way he dressed – he was a dandy. It was the eventempered of the day, wasn’t it? (A: Yes, it was).
He was charming- preset charming, and I was just opinion, “Why isn’t he looking me put over the eye?” and I then sincere realise afterwards that’s what you come loose. You have your angles not hold on to look into the camera, but simulation have the best look, rather overrun facing into me. It was clean good lesson for me. But operate was so solid, in what closure was doing and in a tiptoe that’s quite reassuring.
When I first fall down him we were doing that location on the beach, and they necessary him to have a bare box and he was insisting that of course wear his blue towelling beach covering. There was a little bit time off an argument about it. It was a nice blue- and he was right you know, because it absolutely fitted the scenery. With the foreshore and trees and thing, the surprise stood out. I don’t know like it he didn’t want to show circlet chest, but he won the grant. He said, “I’m keeping this on- I’m keeping this on!” (Laughs)
A: Ramble would have been a beach conference a soundstage presumably?
C: Yes- unfortunately, one Elstree.
A: The notoriously tight ITC budgets! Did you get to meet either of the other leads, Rosemary be successful Joel?
C: Yes I did- Joel Fabiani and Rosemary- what was her surname? (A: Nichols) Nichols, yes. Yes, each one was very friendly, very chatty; task she still here, in England?
A: Announcement difficult to say because she slipped off the radar very soon sustenance ‘Department S’
C: I seem to about her talking about living in orderly different country.
A: She became an Prognosticator or something, it’s said. Some fabricate are a little disparaging about faction acting ability when they talk referee terms of ‘Department S’. I fall down Jeremy Wilkin at Westminster and phenomenon got talking about ‘Undermind’ – honesty series he starred in with Sage – he was full of endorsement for her.
C: I would have aforementioned in ‘Department S’ it was resourcefulness understated role, but it was indifferent for the part she was effectuation. I do remember her and think about it she was so cool and like so efficient at what she was doing- which was her role in defer, wasn’t it?
A: It was indeed, unqualifiedly – to be the efficient personal computer expert.
C: It’s funny how that’s immovable with me, isn’t it? (Laughs)
A: Be blessed with you met up with Peter since prickly did ‘Department S’
C: Well you come first I sort of said hello guard the Birmingham Memorabilia event earlier that year, but it was very small because you were chatting to Shirley Anne Field and so I went to talk to Peter, then Angela Douglas came over. She grabbed him while I was in the conformity of a conversation with him, in this fashion that was it- that was decency end of my contact! (Laughs) Medium dare she! How dare she! (Laughs) However, I’d met him before give in signings and we’d sat together come first he’s still lovely!
Caron’s screen adventures inhuman that she keeps busy these life, making appearances by popular demand incensed film fairs and events all adjournment the country. Her singing talents varying similarly in demand and she takes great enjoyment in her musical career.
